Understanding UNESCO’s AI Competency Framework: A Guide for Parents and Teachers
The UNESCO AI Competency Framework is designed to help parents and educators prepare students to navigate the AI-driven world responsibly by focusing on core skills and ethical understanding.
The Five Key Competency Areas
The framework is built around five essential domains that collectively ensure a holistic understanding and application of AI:

Within each of the five areas, competencies are developed progressively through three distinct levels:
-
Acquire: Focuses on basic knowledge and foundational understanding.
-
Deepen: Focuses on intermediate skills and analytical ability.
-
Create: Focuses on advanced skills, innovation, and the ability to design or critically evaluate AI systems and policies.
UNESCO’s Emphasis
UNESCO emphasizes that achieving these competencies requires a strategic, systemic approach involving:
-
Developing relevant curriculum materials.
-
Implementing robust teacher training programs.
-
Ensuring inclusive practices so that all students, regardless of background or ability, can engage meaningfully with AI.
