Understanding UNESCO’s AI Competency Framework: A Guide for Parents and Teachers

Within each of the five areas, competencies are developed progressively through three distinct levels:

  1. Acquire: Focuses on basic knowledge and foundational understanding.

  2. Deepen: Focuses on intermediate skills and analytical ability.

  3. Create: Focuses on advanced skills, innovation, and the ability to design or critically evaluate AI systems and policies.

UNESCO’s Emphasis

UNESCO emphasizes that achieving these competencies requires a strategic, systemic approach involving:

  • Developing relevant curriculum materials.

  • Implementing robust teacher training programs.

  • Ensuring inclusive practices so that all students, regardless of background or ability, can engage meaningfully with AI.
